Writing about worship comes with responsibility. A wrong date or a careless sentence about Zakat al-Fitr can affect someone's Eid. This page sets out the standards we hold ourselves to.
Sources
- Qur'an. Verses are given in translated meaning, with surah and verse numbers. Translations are paraphrased in clear English and checked against established translations.
- Hadith. We cite well-known collections, mainly Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abi Dawud, Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Sunan Ibn Majah and al-Muwatta, with the collection and number so readers can look them up. We avoid narrations that are widely considered weak, and we don't use quotes that circulate online without a traceable source.
- Fiqh. For rulings, we summarise the standard positions of the four Sunni schools of law (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali) as they appear in recognised works and are taught in mosques today.
- Dates. Expected dates come from the Umm al-Qura calendar and published astronomical data. We always label them as expected, because religious dates are confirmed by moon sighting.
Differences of opinion
Where scholars genuinely differ, we present the main views fairly and say who holds them. We don't take sides on matters of legitimate difference, and we encourage readers to follow their local mosque and the scholars they trust.
What we don't do
- We don't issue fatwas or personal religious rulings.
- We don't give medical advice. Where health affects fasting, we tell readers to speak to a doctor.
- We don't publish sponsored or paid-for articles, and advertisers have no say over our content.
- We don't use images of people or animals, or musical instruments. The homepage's optional nasheed is vocal only and can be muted.
Writing and checking
Each guide is drafted from the sources above, then checked line by line against them before publication: every hadith reference, every date, every quantity. Pages show the date they were last updated, and we review time-sensitive guides as Ramadan approaches and again once dates are announced.
Corrections
If we get something wrong, we want to know. Tell us through our contact page, with a source if you have one. We check every report. Where a correction changes the meaning of a guide, we update it promptly and change the "updated" date at the top of the page.
