Ramadan 1448 at a glance
Eid al-Fitr is the first day of Shawwal, the month that follows Ramadan. It is one of only two festivals in the Islamic year, and it begins with a prayer of thanks after a month of fasting.
Because the Islamic calendar follows the moon, each of these dates can move by a day depending on where you live. We've listed the dates from the Umm al-Qura calendar, which many communities use as a guide.
All dates 2027. Islamic days begin at sunset, so a "night" comes before its day.
The road to Eid
The moon thins night by night until it disappears, and Eid arrives with the first sliver of the new month.

Making the most of the last tenThe Night of Decree, better than a thousand months. Nobody knows exactly which night it is, so it's sought on the odd nights: the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th.
The dua to say on these nightsA small, fixed charity for every person in the household, so that families in need can eat well on Eid too. Most people give it a day or two before.
Who pays, and how muchAfter sunset, people look west for the new moon. If it's seen, tomorrow is Eid. If not, Ramadan runs to thirty days and Eid comes the day after.
How the date is decidedA bath, your best clothes and a few dates before you leave. The takbir on the way, two rak'ahs together, a short sermon, then a different road home.
How to pray Salat al-EidFast six days in the month after Ramadan and, according to the hadith, it is as if you fasted the whole year. They don't need to be back to back.
